They plan a return trip to Rwanda this April where in cooperation with ASU they will be conducting a field study on using this technique.

Suzanne is also part of the Rwandan Orphan Quilting Project, a project she began in partnership with Sedona resident Dottie Webster, in an effort to teach older children a trade and earn money for education when they leave the Orphanage.

Dottie Webster Dottie Webster

Originally from Texas, Dottie’s professional and personal life involves   volunteerism with a passion to help and an entrepreneurial spirit in business ventures.  She and her husband owned and operated a successful manufacturing business in Indiana for 23 years, retiring to Sedona in 1996.

Here most noted involvement locally is being a Founding Board Member of Sedona Woman, Dames Who Make a Difference, Chamber Music Sedona Advisory Board, appearing in Sedona’s presentation of The Vagina Monologues, and co chairing one of the first fund raisers for the Sedona Medical Center. Coauthoring the successful coffee table book, A Window On Sedona was also a joy.

Earning her(TFT) Thought Field Therapy DX Certification lead Dottie to three recent TFT Trauma Relief deployments.  Helping others as a volunteer using TFT in New Orleans in 2006 and twice in Rwanda, top her list of rewarding experiences.  The Trauma Relief Research in Rwanda 2006-2007 at an orphanage of 400 children has lead to another Trauma research deployment using TFT with adults in Rwanda this year.

As a result of this work and caring about the children of the El Shaddai Orphanage in Kigali, Rwanda she and Suzanne Connolly sponsored a quilting project in the orphanage. The orphan boys design and sew quilts from African fabrics and Suzanne and Dottie are marketing them in the US and returning all funds to the orphanage and children creating the quilts.

Martha Mertz Martha Mertz

Back in the early 80’s, ATHENA International’s founder, Martha Mertz was asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Lansing Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce. After finding herself to be the only business woman serving on the Board and discovering that her Chamber had only once honored a woman, Martha quickly recognized that the Chamber’s boardroom did not reflect the reality of the community. Martha worked with her Chamber to recognize the leadership of outstanding professional and business women in the community and advocated to provide opportunities for them to move into leadership positions. This concept led to the idea of acknowledging and honoring those quiet leaders, mostly women, whose efforts were adding immensely to the fabric of their communities while they remained unacknowledged and not visible as leaders. Since the program’s inception in 1982 more than 5000 awards have been presented in over 500 communities in the United States, Canada, China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and most recently the United Kingdom.
